When my oldest son, a Marine, left for war and crossed the border from Kuwait into Iraq in March 2003 I started writing my conscience. Oregon end to end in a day and a half

The I-5 corridor gets pretty dreary after a while. The price you have to pay for connecting resources and talent in a wide open state like Oregon is lots and lots of miles.

There are some side benefits like shopping at Costco or hitting a mall between stops for a wide variety of shoe choices or catching a quick bite to eat and a trendy eatery. While examining the adhesives section at Lowe’s a total stranger regaled me with his on the scene perspective of the 1980 Iranian hostage rescue where 8 helicopters, 6 C-130 transport planes, and 93 Delta force commandoes secretly invaded Iran. They were to rendezvous at a place in Iran they called Desert One, move out to another point called Desert Two, and then go on to Tehran to rescue the hostages. But Delta force never made it to Desert Two or Tehran. The mission was aborted after three of the eight helicopters failed…. cuz one of the pilots was an idiot… and the story went on

Stuff like this never happens in Coos County.

    I couldn’t find a proper place to put this, so this will have to do.

    What a chicken poop thing for the Editor of the World to bury this tidbit under the topic, “Cougars prowl Klamath Falls”. Why wouldn’t Clark want the locals to know about the Feather in Florences’ cap? And of course, some naysayer has to butt in and remind Coos County politicians what wankers they are, you know, that gol darn reality Clark so tries to avoid so as not to disturb his Village Idiot Readers.

    Newport residents thrilled over ship base

    | NEWPORT (AP) — Residents of this coastal town are still “ecstatic” weeks after learning Newport will be the new home of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s West Coast marine operations center, Gov. Ted Kulongoski said.

    “It’s almost like a nonstop birthday party. People are still celebrating,” Kulongoski said Wednesday after getting a briefing from local port and NOAA officials about the move.

    Earlier this month, NOAA announced it would transfer the center and a fleet of research ships assigned to it from Seattle to Newport, a move that will involve about 175 jobs.
