Jayme Sue Austin memorial draws a crowd

IMG_0779As a testament to the impact this murder had on the friends and family of Jayme Austin and the community the Lone Pine Fire Hall in Fairview was packed to the gills and the doors opened to allow participation from outside.

It was a moving and emotional service and afterward, as befitting the rural farm area and Jayme’s upbringing riding horses and carousing in the neighborhood, the stories were earthy and funny. My sons traveled up from California and I rushed over from an event I was participating in in Cottage Grove and I learned a lot about Jayme’s feisty spirit and how much her family will miss her.

To her family I hope they will hold themselves for better times. To Jayme, peace be upon you.

Jayme Sue Austin strangled to death

What we all feared, especially with the broken necklace, is that Jayme was strangled. Dominick Dunne, who wrote a book about the murder of his daughter, Dominique, noted the prosecution highlighted for the jury the intense effort required by one human to strangle another. Horath would have had to maintain the pressure on Jayme’s neck for six full minutes. During the trial for Dunne’s killer, the prosecution set a timer and told the courtroom to be silent for six full minutes… the illustration successfully ended the defense argument the murder was an accident, or sudden crime of passion.

My heart aches for the family, the unimaginable pain of losing a loved one to another member of the family in such a vicious manner will tear them to pieces for a long time to come.

Jayme was a frequent visitor here, when my son, Chris, lived in Coquille. She last visited in September when my kids were up for my birthday. We all just feel so awful and Chris cannot believe he worked with her alleged killer, it has given him a very uncomfortable feeling.

Coquille woman goes missing under suspicious circumstance

Jayme Austin, a young Coquille woman and friend of my sons’ disappeared yesterday.

She asked to go to her mother’s place to take a shower before going to work in Coos Bay. At noon, Gisholt got a call from Austin’s employer, who said Austin never showed up for work. Gisholt went home and found her daughter’s car parked outside her residence, 59376 Fairview Road, but Austin was not there, nor at her home down the road.

Unconfirmed reports indicate there were signs of a struggle and that Jayme may have had a stalker. She was also reportedly ending an abusive relationship with an individual who is believed to be at sea on a commercial fishing boat and not likely responsible for her disappearance. Other reports state that divers are searching a pond in the vicinity of her mother’s home.

Please keep up the good thoughts for her safe return.

Coquille suffers an infrastructure failure

We were spared too much inconvenience at this house and I first heard about the water main/pipe rupture on Adams St while shopping at the Safeway. Alas, anyone unfortunate to smell the consequences of not maintaining the sewer system would not be surprised at a water system failure as well. The nation has long neglected its infrastructure and plumbing systems designed to last 100 years are now nearing 200 years of age across the country.

A report or study I read some time ago and can’t immediately put my hands on estimated the cost of upgrading the nation’s water systems in the trillions of dollars. The same extraordinary numbers are applied to rebuilding the aging electrical grid and America’s roads, bridges and dams are in dire need of repair.

On the bright side, it appears that water service has been fully restored by City of Coquille Public Works crews.

Slowly, too slowly, getting things caught up

Been suffering from a bit of information overload, lately. Must admit, everything I am learning is of utmost interest to me and I love reading more and more on my favorite subjects, energy, economics (which I used to hate) and ecology. There is no limit to the information available and I am tasked by virtue of business demands to disseminate all of it into a comprehensive plan and series of articles.

Doing all this cuts into my personal life, however, and compounded with all the travel I find myself getting further and further behind on everything including my salvation, exercise and family and friends. Schedules are looking to get worse before they get better so I am not too sure how well I will keep up with this blog although I will be publishing the articles mentioned above here as well as elsewhere.

One thing to note, my experiment with barefoot running seems to be working though I have only logged 12 barefoot miles so far. For other runners, I suggest you give it a try as it completely takes the pressure off your hips and lets your foot perform like a foot is supposed to perform. Pretty cool!

Coquille raw sewage dumps into the river

Five thousand gallons of raw sewage were ‘accidentally’ dumped into the Coquille River when a computer malfunction or power failure caused a pump to stop working. Forgive my skepticism but when I ride my bike by and have to hold my breath and see bubbling brown ooze cresting the top of the plant, I can’t help but wonder if the release was more intentional than accidental.

The sewer treatment issue has long been debated around here with the City Council continually voting to defer badly needed maintenance. Unfortunately, the aging council members don’t even have the good grace to stop running for a seat in favor of some new blood. The antique council might explain why they continue with the same city manager despite a mediocre performance these last nine or ten years.

Please Coquille, can these people!

PS. Filter your drinking water

Running barefoot, well almost

For many years I was a runner, forty to fifty miles a week, until an old ski injury caught up with me. After a couple of years on crutches I took up biking to replace that endorphin fix and I absolutely love biking. Running, however, is such a joy and I have really missed it so I was delighted when I read Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, by Christopher McDougall.

Evidently, we are literally designed, genetically engineered you might say, to run and to run barefoot. Running shoes alter your stride to land on your heel instead of the balls of your feet jarring the hips and causing many other injuries. However, if you run as nature intended landing on the balls of your feet the impact is absorbed much differently, efficiently so that the Tarahumara tribes people, ultramarathoners, keep running into their nineties.

So, with the help of some Vibram Five Finger shoes that allow the toes to splay and grab, the arch to bend and the calves to absorb impact and a skinny little sole to protect from stickers, I am hoping to add some running back into my endorphin fix. So far, so good.

Mary’s Pretty Pink Bush

IMG_0497I’m curious about the fascination with your Pretty Pink Bush M.

It does seem to have attracted the attention of some of your neighbors. I know I was there several times when visitors remarked about how healthy and beautiful your Pretty Pink Bush was.  Isn’t it wonderful when neighbors are able to recognize their fellow citizens’ efforts to beautify the entire neighborhood?

Now you and all your neighbors can sing: “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood” together in one great big “group hug”.

Surely no one could complain about the beauty we’ve been blessed with.

Surely, no one would carry around a tape measure to make sure your Beautiful Pink Bush is legal, would they?

Really?

I guess you just cannot please some people, huh?

I’ve been your friend for years and I have never been so obsessed with your Pretty Pink Bush as some of the citizens of Coquille seem to be, even carrying around measuring devices to make sure your Pretty Pink Bush is legal.

Can’t you just see Inspector Clouiseau with his hat and his looking glass, and his measuring stick walking the mean streets of Coquille, making sure no ne else’s Pretty Pink Bush gets too big for their britches.

No accounting for latent yearnings, huh?

Moving the V-LIM to Portland

After trying very hard to complete the V-LIM turbine with local talent I am giving up on Coos Bay for the time being and taking the components to Portland for final assembly. Once complete we will bring it back to Coos County for testing.

Recent bad experiences with some local ‘business persons’ and local workers, the character of whom seem to be more prevalent than not, have left a very bad taste in my mouth for ever establishing a manufacturing facility in Coos County. Rogue River Wind, Ltd, will see the Western Oregon Wind project through for the school kids and then leave Coos County to the ‘manly men’ who think nothing of trying to pick the pockets of a hard working companies and the public that lets it happen.

Not that all experiences have been bad, there are good companies in Coos County like Koontz Machine Shop in Coos Bay and CAPCO powder coating in Coquille, (well worth the drive from North Bend), even the International Port of Coos Bay has been awesome, but the three bad experiences are soooo bad that I just don’t want to do business here anymore. Luckily for me, I don’t have to.
