Olbermann – The witch hunt vs Sherrod and those who enabled it

Read the excellent transcript here

I have sat behind this desk for seven years and pushed back at these counterfeit journalists, as a man might stand at the shore and try to push back the tide. I have been branded an ideologue and a profiteer and a mirror of image of that which I assail. I have said it in every way I could think of, and been told I have been over-the-top because I have mocked and shouted and repeated.

And today the proof lies in front of you, bleeding: the reputation of Shirley Sherrod, a woman who 24 years ago saw and overcame the vengeance in her own heart and achieved the kind of true greatness the rest of us can only hope we might express for one moment in the whole of our lives. Assassinated by Fox News! Assassinated by that scum Breitbart! Assassinated by all their meager-brained imitators on other channels and other sites, their limp fellow travelers who never asked questions first, but simply shot, and shot, and shot, and shot and laughed!

Let me make this utterly clear: What you see on Fox News, what you read on Right Wing websites, is the utter and complete perversion of journalism, and it can have no place in a civilized society. It is words crashed together, never to inform, only to inflame. It is a political guillotine. It is the manipulation of reality to make the racist seem benevolent, and to convict the benevolent as racist — even if her words must be edited, filleted, stripped of all context, rearranged, fabricated, and falsified, to do so.

BP is still number one provider of oil to US Department of Defense

Despite mounting evidence that BP is a bad actor and a bill penidng in the Senate, the nation is now caught deciding whether national security, ie, supplying adequate fuel to the military is more critical than protecting the gulf coast and billions of dollars in fishing and tourism.

The amendment was put forward by Illinois Democrat Luis Gutierrez. “There is ample evidence leading up to and including the current disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that BP is not a ‘responsible source’ and shows a consistent disregard for federal law and the lives and livelihoods of Americans,” Gutierrez said. The bill is currently in the Senate.

The ‘lives and livelihoods of Americans’ is clearly not at the top of BP’s list of priorities. Consider this expose´ from Rachel Maddow about the lack of readiness for such a disaster. Below that, satirist Lewis Black and Keith Olbermann compare BP CEO, Tony Hayward to Baghdad Bob of the initial invasion into Iraq. Funny if it weren’t so true.

Lewis Black on Glenn BeckOlbermann replays The Daily Show ‘Back in Black’ segment that has the internet and those of us that find Beck RIDICULUS.

Olbermann – Upper Big Branch – Mining companies sacrifice employees for profit

Massey Energy is certainly an extreme example of the lack of regard the mining industry has for its employees but safety failures are rampant throughout the industry. As Jeff Goodell, author of Big Coal points out it is cheaper to pay the fines than ensure employees go home safely. Deservedly, their stock is suffering for that decision. Surface mining also has fatalities and injuries as recorded at Mine Safety and Health Administration

Why are organizations like SCDC and FONSI promoting such an industry in Coos County? Is this what Coos County should be known for? Dirty industry that other areas will not accept? The nation’s dumping ground?

Olbermann – Rove rewrites history

Not a surprise that Karl Rove, ‘Bush’s brain’ would have a view of the lead-up to the Iraq war totally out of sync with proven facts.

thus tonight, for all those who we have met along the way, those with whom we have shared the last two months inside the belly of the beast, and for everyone in this country who will be here and right soon tonight, Countdown will be devoted entirely to a Special Comment on the subject of health care reform in this country.

Olbermann – Top socialist states in America

Topping the list is “Lets secede from the Union” Texas! Government run flood insurance has been around for decades but that only covers ‘property’, not people.

Olbermann – Examining the Baucus health care reform sellout

Put simply, Senator Max Baucus’ health reform proposal appears to have been well worth the $3M he has received from the health insurance industry while sticking it to middle class America.

Below is a recap of what maintaining the status quo has already cost Oregon.

Health Insurance Reform Cannot Wait in Oregon

Last week, the U.S. Census released its new numbers for the uninsured. The results are sobering and confirm that health insurance reform cannot wait another year. Nationwide, the number of uninsured increased from 39.8 million in 2001 to 46.3 million in 2008. The facts below underscore the urgency of health insurance reform for residents of Oregon.

* The status quo is not an option. The number of uninsured in Oregon has increased from 430,000 in 2001 to 621,000 in 2008. The percent of non-elderly adults without insurance increased from 15.2% to 21.5%. And this number only considers people who are uninsured for an entire year – it does not include the millions of people in Oregon who have more recently lost coverage through the recession, or who had shorter gaps in their coverage.

* Private coverage is eroding under the status quo. The percentage of people with employer-based coverage decreased from 73.1% of the population in 2001 to 69.7% in 2008.

* More workers are being left without protection from health care costs. Too many workers in Oregon do not have health coverage, at 393,000 in 2008. And the proportion of workers from Oregon without insurance has increased, from 14.6% in 2001 to 20.2% in 2008.

* The problem of the uninsured is a problem that crosses income brackets. The new Census numbers also drive home the fact that everyone in Oregon is vulnerable to losing health insurance. An additional 57,000 people from high-income households are now uninsured.

White House calls out Glenn Beck ‘czar’ lies

Striking back at the efforts of Fox News host, Glenn Beck to paint President Obama as a communist because of ’32 czars’ in his administration, the White House strikes a hefty blow to reveal Beck’s lies.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve seen with increasing frequency and volume issues raised around the use of “czars” by this Administration. Although some Members have asked serious questions around the makeup of the White House staff, the bulk of the noise you hear began first with partisan commentators, suggesting that this is somehow a new and sinister development that threatens our democracy. This is, of course, ridiculous. Just to be clear, the job title “czar” doesn’t exist in the Obama Administration. Many of the officials cited by conservative commentators have been confirmed by the Senate. Many hold policy jobs that have existed in previous Administrations. And some hold jobs that involved coordinating the work of agencies on President Obama’s key policy priorities: health insurance reform, energy and green jobs, and building a new foundation for long-lasting economic growth

The use of the word czar to represent the point man in an organization or department was coined in 1973 to describe President Nixon’s appointee to the Director of the Office of Energy Policy, John Love. Whether the media uses the term ‘czar’ to shorten an otherwise lengthy job title, like call Staff Sargeant Smith ‘Sarge’ for short has no more to do with communism today than it did when Nixon was in office.

Why is Fox News so comfortable allowing a know nothing, fear mongering idiot like Beck have a platform? Oh, yeah, advertising money is more important than democracy or journalistic integrity.

Countdown did a good run down, again, of the Beck hallucinations and deliberate misrepresentations.

The University of “I am making this up”

Olbermann – Special comment – Factual errors worse than rudeness

Keith outdoes himself tonight and rightly points out that we have way too much ignorance in this country and in Congress for this country to prevail. Rep Joe Wilson was not only disrespectful, he was WRONG!

In my opinion, the same can be said for some of the elected officials in Coos County as well.
